Tips to make your whey protein better

Whey can be a convenient way to supplement your diet's protein needs, but some people may dislike the taste of the supplement and wonder how to improve the taste of whey protein.

So, how do you improve the taste of whey protein? The simplest way to improve the taste of whey is to mix it with other ingredients, mix it with a liquid other than water, use fruit and milk, and choose a reputable brand of whey protein.

In this post, we'll explore some strategies for improving the flavor of whey and any other protein powder, as well as examine the reasons behind unpleasant flavors and provide guidance on which ingredients are suitable for mixing with protein powder.

1 – You don’t have to use just water (if you don’t want to)

Many people think that mixing whey with any liquid other than water can "ruin" the supplement's properties. This couldn't be further from the truth.

Whey protein is nothing more than a powdered food with a high protein content. Mixing whey with other ingredients generally doesn't affect the protein quality or absorption.

Therefore, the first step to improving the taste of whey is to remove this possible weight of conscience that you may be ruining something by mixing whey with another liquid (besides water).

2 – Use a blender

Blending your whey in a blender can help mechanically create a smoother, more homogeneous and pleasant texture, as some wheys don't mix properly when you shake the shaker.

Plus, blenders are fast and efficient, making it easy to whip up a protein shake in just a few minutes. They also have the unique advantage of allowing you to use ice cubes to make a refreshing, thicker, and creamier protein shake.

3 – Mix with milk or milk substitutes

There's no problem mixing milk with whey protein. Doing so will simply supplement the protein intake and add flavor, consistency, and creaminess to the shake.

Additionally, mixing whey with milk can add calories that can be very beneficial for those who are bulking (wanting to gain weight and muscle mass).

If you don't consume animal products or have problems with cow's milk, you can also use plant-based milks such as:

Almond milk;Oat milk;Rice milk.Chestnut milk.4 – Choose a good brand of whey protein

Believe me, it's not a marketing ploy to get you to buy a specific brand. The point is that some whey products may be manufactured using the cheapest sweeteners possible to add flavor and lower costs, without flavor being the priority.

Additionally, some artificial sweeteners of dubious origin can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, stomach pain, and gas. Therefore, it's a good idea to choose a whey protein from a well-known brand that likely places greater emphasis on the taste of its product.

5 – Beware of “exotic” flavors

If the taste of whey protein is important to you, choosing exotic flavors is the riskiest decision you can make.

When I say “exotic flavors” I’m referring to things that go beyond the basic flavors (strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla), things like passion fruit mousse, lemon pie, tropical passion fruit, and things that are quite unusual.

Even if the exotic flavor comes from a fruit or food you enjoy, keep in mind that artificial flavors aren't the same, and mixed with whey, the flavor may be quite different from what you imagine. And, in practice, the more "exotic" the flavor, the more dubious the origin of the artificial sweetener, as it's unusual.

When in doubt, to minimize risks, stick with the basic flavors.

6 – Use fresh or frozen fruit

Mixing whey protein with fresh fruit adds natural flavors that can mask whey's sometimes artificial or monotonous taste. Additionally, fruit can naturally sweeten the shake and enhance the taste simply by making the mix sweeter.

By adding frozen fruit, you can make the shake thicker and creamier, as well as making it a refreshing drink in hot weather.

Finally, adding fruit (fresh or frozen) increases the nutritional value of the shake, adding vitamins, minerals and fiber to the mix.

7 – Take whey immediately after preparing the shake

Try to drink your whey shake immediately after making it. This will ensure the flavors of the mix are as close to the "original" as possible because they're fresh.

If you're not going to drink your shake immediately, you can store it in the refrigerator for a few hours. However, if you don't refrigerate it after mixing the powder with liquid, you should consume it within 2 hours. This is because the shake will start to spoil after a while and won't be as healthy or tasty.

8 – Add spices

To enhance the taste of whey, you can also add spices like cinnamon, vanilla extract, or cocoa powder to add extra flavor to your shake.

You can try adding them in small amounts and then increasing the amount until you find a flavor that suits your personal preferences.
